Preparing for your Eye Exam
Am I covered by OHIP?
OHIP covers yearly comprehensive eye exams for those 19 years and under, or 65 years and older. Adults between 20-64 may be covered if there are certain pre-existing health conditions or ocular disease. Otherwise, please check with your health benefit coverage, as we can direct bill to most insurance companies.
What should I bring?
current eye glasses
OHIP card
Insurance health benefit card
list of medications
sunglasses
What should I expect?
Patient Check-in
We ask that new patients arrive a 5 minutes earlier than their scheduled appointment to check-in and fill out the necessary patient intake forms. This is also a great time to prepare a list of questions you would like to ask our optometrist, Dr. Yew.
Eye Dilation
As part of the routine eye exam, all adults are recommended to have their eyes dilated with eye drops. This is to ensure that Dr. Yew obtains a thorough look in the eye for a complete assessment of your eye health. Children generally do not receive dilating drops unless there is an indication to. The most common side effect is blurred near vision and light sensitivity, lasting approximately 3-4 hours. It is recommended that you bring your sunglasses and preferably a driver if you have never had your eyes dilated in the past.
Direct Billing
At Polaris Eye Care, we strive to make your experience here simple and convenient. That is why we direct bill to most of the major insurance companies including Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, Desjardins, Industrial Alliance, and Green Shield among others. If the cost of products and services are more than what the benefit coverage is, the patient only has to pay the difference out of pocket. Simply bring your insurance card with you to your examination. We will be able check eligibility in real time and let you know if and how much your insurance covers towards vision.
