The College of Optometrists recommends your child’s first eye exam at 6 months old. Our optometrists will evaluate your child’s eye tracking abilities, eye alignment, and prescription to ensure it is within the expected range (i.e., farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism). They will also examine for the presence of congenital eye diseases such as retinoblastoma, blocked tear duct, and congenital cataracts. At this age, our optometrists will rely mainly on objective testing results. They may discuss with you activities to do at home with your infant to promote their visual development. Visual abilities play a key role in early development, so don’t delay in bringing your child in for an eye exam.
Following your child’s first eye exam at 6 months, the College of Optometrists recommends the next exam at 3 years old, and yearly after that. At this stage, your child is learning by actively engaging with their environment and new forms of play. Visual skills such as depth perception and visual-motor coordination are essential to your child’s learning. Often, your child will not verbalize any visual struggles because they assume that everyone else sees the way they do. That is why it is important to bring your child in for a comprehensive exam to ensure efficient visual skills are present to encourage their desire for discovery.
Yearly comprehensive eye exams are recommended for school-aged children. As your child grows, their eyes grow with them, and for some, this may mean prescription glasses are needed to see clearly in the classroom. Aside from a prescription, additional visual skills must work in a coordinated manner to achieve clear, comfortable, and single vision. If any of these visual skills are impaired, your child may exhibit various symptoms that can take away from important academic tasks such as reading efficiency and comprehension. Increased visual demands at school can point out a vision problem that was not previously apparent.
If your child struggles with these symptoms, please call in to schedule an appointment. Our doctors may recommend a Functional Visual Skills assessment to investigate further into how your child is using their eyes.
For adults, comprehensive eye exams are integral to ensuring visual clarity and eye health. Our eyes change as we age, along with the risk of certain eye conditions. Your eyes provide a window to your overall health, and routine eye exams can detect underlying and potentially life-threatening health issues such as Type 2 diabetes, certain vascular diseases, high blood pressure, and brain or eye tumors. Adults aged 19 to 64 should have an eye exam at least once every two years.
Seniors aged 65 and older are strongly recommended to schedule their OHIP-covered eye exam once per year.
Seniors are at an increased risk of developing age-related eye health problems that can lead to permanent vision loss. Many eye diseases have no early symptoms, and you may not notice any vision changes until the condition has progressed to an advanced stage. Seniors have an increased incidence of developing glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye. Expert care from our optometrists is essential for early detection and management of ocular diseases to preserve your vision and maintain your quality of life. Seniors age 65 and older are strongly recommended to schedule their OHIP-covered eye exam once per year.

Typically, 20 – 30 mins without dilation, and 45 – 60 mins with dilation
As part of the comprehensive eye exam, all adults are recommended to have their eyes dilated with eye drops. Children generally do not receive dilating drops at every visit unless there is an indication for this. The most common side effect is blurred near vision and light sensitivity, lasting approximately 3–4 hours. It is recommended that you bring your sunglasses and preferably a driver if you haven’t had your eyes dilated in the past.
Yes, we direct the bill to most major insurance companies including Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, Desjardins, Industrial Alliance, and Green Shield among others. If the cost of products and services are more than what the benefit coverage is, the patient only has to pay the difference out of pocket.
