Frequently
Asked
Questions

Are eye exams covered by OHIP?
+

OHIP covers comprehensive eye exam for:

  • 19 years and under: once per year
  • 20 – 64 years: once per year for specific conditions
  • 65 years and older: once per year for specific conditions, otherwise every 18
    months

For those outside of OHIP eligibility, please check with your health benefit coverage, as we can direct bill to most insurance companies.

How long does an eye exam take?
+

Typically, 20 – 30 mins without dilation, and 45 – 60 mins with dilation

What do I need to bring with me?
+
  • current eye glasses
  • OHIP card
  • Insurance health benefit card
  • list of medications
  • sunglasses
Will I be getting eye drops (dilation)?
+

As part of the comprehensive eye exam, all adults are recommended to have their eyes dilated with eye drops. Children generally do not receive dilating drops at every visit unless there is an indication for this. The most common side effect is blurred near vision and light sensitivity, lasting approximately 3–4 hours. It is recommended that you bring your sunglasses and preferably a driver if you haven’t had your eyes dilated in the past.

Do you direct bill?
+

Yes, we direct the bill to most major insurance companies including Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, Desjardins, Industrial Alliance, and Green Shield among others. If the cost of products and services are more than what the benefit coverage is, the patient only has to pay the difference out of pocket.

How often should I have an eye exam?
+

Following the Canadian Association of Optometrists guidelines, we recommend getting an eye exam:

  • Starting at 6 months old
  • Once between ages 2–5 years
  • Yearly exams for school aged children until 19 years old
  • Every 2 years if you are aged 20-64 (yearly for those with diabetes)
  • Every year if you are 65 years and older
